Trade Union Strategies Against Racism

The initiative “Respect! No Place for Racism” of the German trade union IG Metall was founded as a response to the increasing polarization of society that paved the way for a growing popularity of the right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD).

In a practical hands-on approach, they organize a broad variety of workshops and seminars focusing on knowledge transfer, exchange and a critical examination of right-wing populism, racism, discrimination and xenophobia.

IF Metall decided to develop a strategy against racism and intolerance in 2010, as a response to the growing support for the Sweden Democrats (SD) among their own members. Knowledge transfer, anti-racist activities and taking the debate with members and in media are important parts of their strategy. When the requests for more knowledge and arguments kept coming, they continued and developed their engagement.

Together with Maurizio Cavaliere (IG Metall), Hans Pamqvist (If Metall), Elsa-Maria Salvo (Arena Opinion) we invite you to discuss different approaches of trade union strategies against racism. Learn more about the strategies of IG Metall and IF Metall, how do trade unions’ anti-racist actions differ in Germany and Sweden? What roles do they play in the social discourse? How successful are their strategies and what could be improved? The seminar is moderated by Josefin Fürst (FES).
