The Industrial High Road to Sustainability and Growth - Report of the Economic Council 2012

On October 25, 2012 Arena's Economic Council and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung conducted its annual international economic conference. The theme and discussions 2012 established the links with the European economic crisis. But the focus was mainly on finding strategies to formulate a modern industrial policy that can create new jobs, full employment and a social and environmentally sustainable economic development. In this report, we have collected several of the presentations at the seminar. An introductory text summarizes the presentations and discussions. Some of PDF presentations are attached at the end of the document.

Parliamentary Elections in Iceland - How the Elections Could Affect Future EU Membership

On the 27th of April, parliamentary elections will be held in Iceland. After the beginning of the financial crisis and the collapse of the Icelandic economy in October 2008, the government (consisting of social-democrats and a left-green movement) managed to lead the country back to positive economic growth without drastic cuts in social welfare. Despite this economic recovery the Icelandic government is facing poor election polls which could lead to a possible change of government. In this case, the possibility of Iceland joining the EU will be questioned in principle.

Die "Zukunftspartei" Schwedens? Die Schwedische Sozialdemokratie zwischen erfolgreicher Vergangenheit und unsicherer Zukunft

Kurz vor dem Parteitag der Sozialdemokratischen Arbeiterpartei Schwedens vom 3. bis 7. April in Göteborg präsentiert Jens Gmeiner, Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Göttinger Institut für Demokratieforschung, eine Analyse der aktuellen Herausforderungen und Chancen. Nach zwei desaströsen Wahlergebnissen in den Jahren 2006 und 2010 versuchen die SAP und ihr neuer Parteivorsitzender Stefan Löfven nun, mit einem modernen Image und einem pragmatischen Mitte-Kurs an die erfolgreiche Vergangenheit anzuknüpfen. Ob dies gelingt, oder der neue Weg traditionelle sozialdemokratische Wähler verprellt, bleibt jedoch abzuwarten.

The Fiscal Pact in its current form requires the simultaneous implementation of austerity policies in the countries of the Eurozone. However, the crisis is intensifying markedly in a number of EU countries in the form of a downward spiral. A rethink is therefore urgently needed. Europe needs a growth policy with an investment programme.
